West Coast Council Parking Plan Community Consultation- Queenstown Business District

West Coast Council Parking Plan for Queenstown Central Business District

Request for Comments

Background

In 2018 West Coast Council commissioned the West Coast Parking Strategy, which provided a detailed assessment of the available parking on the West Coast.

The report identified several changes that would improve traffic flow and improve usability of our parking spaces on the West Coast.

The West Coast parking plan for Queenstown focuses on the central business area and surround. No changes were recommended for on-street parking outside of these areas, or in other towns.

Summary

The intention of Council is to improve useability of our limited parking spaces in the Queenstown CBD, to increase parking spaces for people with disabilities, to improve traffic flow for local businesses, minimise blind spots and traffic hazards caused by large vehicles, and to increase parking time limits to create a better shopping experience for locals and tourists alike.

West Coast Council’s parking plan for Queenstown’s CBD takes into consideration the large increase in tourist numbers the town experienced pre Covid-19, and the expected influx of vehicles due to the opening of the Mountain Bike Tracks.

The plan is also influenced by comments and suggestions received from business owners, residents and tourists as reported in the West Coast Parking Strategy Report 2018. Business and visitors expressed a strong desire for 2-hour parking within Queenstown, rather than the current ½ hour parking, or the 1-hour parking recommended in the West Coast Parking Review.
