Works to duplicate the West Tamar Highway in Legana are now complete, delivering safer and more efficient travel for motorists in Northern Tasmania.
The completed duplication is part of Stage 2 of the Northern Roads Package, a $420 million Australian and Tasmanian Government investment, to improve the East and West Tamar highways and the Bass Highway.
The Australian Government has committed $336 million and the Tasmanian Government $84 million on an 80:20 basis to fund this package.
The project, which commenced construction in 2024, has delivered two additional lanes in each direction between Freshwater Point Road and Acropolis Drive in Legana, improving travel time and safety along the key section of the West Tamar Highway.
New pedestrian and active transport facilities have also been delivered as part of the upgrades, including two new pedestrian crossings, a shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, and new bike paths at several intersections.
Traffic lights at the site were turned on at the end of last month.
