The Western Downs is set to come alive for a day of celebration, unity, and welcoming our newest citizens as part of 2024 Australia Day festivities.

Council is collaborating with community organisations throughout the Western Downs to present a variety of fantastic events right across the region on Friday, 26th January, and everyone is invited to join in and take part in the festivities.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said Australia Day was the perfect occasion to demonstrate community pride and celebrate our beautiful region and country.

“Australia Day provides an opportunity for us all to come together as a community to share enjoyable moments with friends and family, and acknowledge the significant contributions made by our residents to both our region and country.” Cr McVeigh said.

“Six Australia Day events will be hosted across the region, each featuring a breakfast and Australia Day Awards Ceremonies.

“This year Chinchilla, Dalby, Miles, and Tara will also play host to family fun at the pool celebrations with discounted entry. It’s an event not to be missed and I encourage everyone to get involved!

“On the Western Downs we all know that ‘it’s the people that make it’, and that is particularly true of Australia Day.

“It’s an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the remarkable individuals who serve as true advocates for their local communities through our esteemed Australia Day Awards.

“Our Australia Day Awards ceremonies will take place at each local event, highlighting our region’s most exceptional residents and the contributions they have made to the Western Downs.”

The Western Downs’ newest citizens will also be welcomed at a special Citizenship Ceremony, which will be held in Dalby on the evening before Australia Day amongst the beautiful surrounds of the region’s newest public space, Mary’s Place.

“The Citizenship Ceremony is a very special addition to our Australia Day celebrations, which will be taking place at Mary’s Place in Dalby on January 25th, where we look forward to welcoming the new citizens,’ he said.

“Extending a warm welcome to new citizens on the Western Downs is a very important occasion for the region and one of the most special honours I have as Mayor.

“I invite everyone to head along to their local Australia Day festivities. Join in welcoming our latest Australians, applaud the recipients of Australia Day awards, and celebrate all the wonderful aspects of living in Australia and the Western Downs.”

Australia Day Events will be held in Chinchilla, Dalby, Miles, Jandowae, Tara, and Wandoan.
