Western Sydney musicians amp up for global celebration

Open mic sessions, train station shows and club concerts by some of Western Sydney’s best musicians are set to dial up the volume on live music in the City of Parramatta on global Make Music Day.

Hip-hop artist Nardean, R&B singer Clarissa Mei and dance duo Korky Buchek are among 30 brilliant acts performing free live shows on Monday 21 June in a partnership between City of Parramatta Council and Sydney Olympic Park.

“Make Music Day is a worldwide extravaganza and we are thrilled to be showcasing some of Western Sydney’s most talented musicians at free shows right across the City of Parramatta on 21 June,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.

“The live music industry was hit hard during the pandemic and our free Make Music Day events not only provide musicians with a professional fee and great spaces to perform in, but will also bring our community together.”

Multiple locations in the City of Parramatta will be transformed into entertainment venues throughout the day, with performances at Parramatta Square, the Albion Hotel and Club Parramatta in Parramatta; Jacaranda Square, Cathy Freeman Park and the Abattoir Heritage Precinct in Sydney Olympic Park; and at Epping Railway Station.

“Sydney Olympic Park is delighted to be working with our friends at the City of Parramatta and Create NSW for the fourth year running on Make Music Day,” Sydney Olympic Park Place Activation & Strategy Senior Manager Tony Nesbitt said.

“This is a great partnership that brings quality music to many locations across the Park and the broader Parramatta Local Government Area. It’s a big win for musicians, residents, workers, and for music – the most universal of all art forms.”

The NSW Government has supported this year’s event by providing $15,000 in funding as part of its program, The Festival of Place.

Make Music Day is a free celebration of music around the world held on 21 June every year in more than 750 cities in 120 countries. It launched in France in 1982.
