Council is looking at ways of improving parking and beach access in New Brighton.

Staff, and consultants, over several years, have looked at ways of improving parking and there are four areas where there is potential for parking to be increased, or improved.

The locations are on Park Street, Ocean Avenue, North Head Road and The Esplanade south.

James Flockton, Infrastructure Planning Coordinator, said that after all investigations, there are very few areas in New Brighton where there is potential for more parking.

“When New Brighton was developed many years ago no one considered the potential for it to be a popular place for beachgoers,” Mr Flockton said.

“Nor did they take into account the impact of climate change and the potential for severe coastal erosion with properties separated from the sensitive dunes and ocean by only a narrow bitumen road.

“The areas with the most potential for an increase in parking capacity are Park Street and Ocean Avenue and we are particularly interested in hearing what people think about the proposals for these areas,” he said.

“I stress that the concepts we have developed are just proposals and Councillors will rely on feedback from the community before they make any decisions about parking improvements.

“This is why it is important for people to look at the proposals and diagrams and let us know what they think,” Mr Flockton said.

Information on proposed parking improvements at New Brighton is on Council’s website.

People can submit their feedback at www.byron.nsw.gov.au/parking-new-brighton. Submissions close on 11 April 2024.

Staff will be at the New Brighton Farmers Market on 9 April, from 8am to 11am, to answer any questions people may have.
