When it comes to speeding, Over is Over

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is working to improve road safety for all Tasmanian road users and welcomes a new campaign launched today, which highlights how your decision to drive over the speed limit can end in tragedy.

The campaign is designed to challenge drivers and riders to rethink their attitudes to speeding and shows how exceeding the speed limit even by ‘a few kms’ is breaking the law.

Supported by the Motor Accidents Insurance Board, the Road Safety Advisory Council’s ‘Over is Over’ campaign urges drivers and riders to make the safe choice never to speed when they get behind the wheel.

In the last five years alone, more than 370 deaths and serious injuries are speeding related. Our goal is to eliminate road trauma and cutting the number of people speeding is a sure-fire way to reduce the road toll.

These numbers signify far more than cold statistics. Every number represents a life lost, or seriously altered. The implications extend even further as each crash has a devastating impact on families, friends, work mates, and entire communities.

Our message to motorists is simple: Driving even a few kms over the speed limit is over. Over is Over.

The campaign will hit Tasmanian TV screens and radio airwaves today and will be seen in newspapers and on billboards around the State.
