Wollongong – when it comes to suburbs getting onboard goal setting, you’re on top!
Key points:
- Thousands of goals have been collected to date in the Wollongong Goals pilot.
- People can share their goal & see what’s coming in so far at the website: wollongonggoals.org
- The initiative is part of the Wollongong Goals pilot project, a non-commercial partnership between Wollongong City Council and Canva.
- Of all our suburbs, Wollongong has contributed the most goals followed by Wombarra and Dapto.
A few weeks into the Wollongong Goals campaign, and already thousands of goals for have been shared with Wollongong, followed by Wombarra and Dapto some of the top ranked suburbs for community involvement.
“We’re seeing some very early data coming in and it makes for fascinating reading,” Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
“I’ve been on the Wollongonggoals.org website and we’re seeing strong themes around peace and safety, basic needs, sustainability and education as the front runners for what people are telling us they want for Wollongong.
“I love reading the specific goals that have been submitted on the website like the one from Meg from 2502 who wants “communities that build each other up”. Then there’s Ben from 2500 who wants “more parks and outdoorsy activities promoted with less concrete jungle”. This one really makes me very happy as it’s so timely – we’re right in the middle of conversations about the next steps on the rejuvenation of a portion of our city’s central park with a brand-new skate park and plans to work through a master planning process for MacCabe Park that will look at how to best use this valued greenspace in the city.”

Wollongong Goals is a non-commercial partnership between Wollongong City Council and Canva. Wollongong is one of two pilots Canva is running globally, alongside a research pilot in the US. In Wollongong, the concept is being tested at a community level.
“Easier and safer to walk and cycle around the whole local government area.” Sam, 2517
Together we’re looking at new ways of community engagement, bringing together Canva’s technology and creativity with Council’s well-established ways of connecting to our community. The organisations are aligned though Canva’s Step Two philosophy and philanthropy, and Council’s commitment to listening to as many diverse community voices as possible to ensure we’re prioritising the things people need and want.
