Woman seriously injured in M1 crash at Cowan

A woman has been seriously injured following a crash on the M1 near the Hawkesbury River overnight.

About 11pm (Wednesday 27 January 2021), emergency services were called to the M1 about 1km south of the Hawkesbury River Bridge, Brooklyn, after reports of a crash between two cars.

Police have been told a 25-year-old female had lost control of her Toyota Corolla, striking the centre rock wall, before coming to rest in lane three where it was struck by a Holden Commodore driven by a 79-year-old man.

The driver of the Corolla suffered fractures to both legs and other serious injuries. She was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.

The man suffered minor injuries.

Officers from Ku-ring-gai Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

All three northbound lanes on the M1 were closed for several hours causing delays but has since reopened.
