Work on crucial Wagga transport corridor to finally begin next week

Preliminary work on Farrer Road is scheduled to begin next week.

Work on the $6.4M widening and upgrade of one of Wagga Wagga’s most important transport corridors is scheduled to start next week.

Preliminary works focusing on roadside drainage along Farrer Road in Boorooma will begin on Friday 15 November and run through until mid December when staged road closures will be implemented.

Sections of Farrer Road will be closed in four stages between 12 December and 30 June 2020 when the project is expected to be completed, weather permitting.

“It’s an important project and a vital piece of infrastructure which is going to bring tremendous benefits to the community,” Wagga Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said.

“We need to close sections of road at various stages to complete the works but we have liaised closely with residents and other key stakeholders to minimise any traffic concerns in the area.

“We’re starting the first stage works in front of The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC) as soon as school holidays start and expect to have that section finished in time for the start of the new school year.

“Then we’ll continue to move along Farrer Road in three more stages, towards the Coolamon Road, and we expect to be finished by early June next year.”

Farrer Road provides essential access for residents living in the residential estate of Boorooma, and people accessing educational facilities at TRAC, TAFE and Charles Sturt University.

Mr Darby said the road was identified for upgrade due to its rising traffic counts and strategic location servicing a growing residential area and educational institutions.

The $6.4M project, being funded by Wagga City Council, will deliver a new 1.9km road with additional turning lanes outside TRAC and at Coolamon Road to improve traffic flow, he said.

Works have been evident in the area in recent months with preliminary works and also the relocation of a gas main pipeline.

Key dates for the Farrer Road upgrade are:

Preliminary works: 15 November-12 December 2019 (some traffic disruption and lane closure)

Stage 1: 12 December 2019-31 January 2020

Stage 2: 3 February-20 March 2020

Stage 3: 23 March-24 April 2020

Stage 4: 27 April to 30 June 2020
