Work starts on a new green space in heart of Sunshine

Brimbank Council will commence works on Monday 17 February, on a new $5.85 million Civic Green space on Sunshine’s Hampshire Road between Devonshire Road and Bennett Place – with trees, lawns and more space for community events and footpath trading.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou said the new development will create a much loved area where shoppers can stay a little longer, meet friends and enjoy community events.

‘Once completed, the new civic green will provide an inviting public space for larger cultural events and a welcoming and safe space for social gatherings.

‘The works are part of the Hampshire Road Master Plan which is transforming the heart of Sunshine into an attractive, well-planned space where people can come together to relax, socialise, shop and stay to enjoy the restaurants and cafes.

‘We encourage people to continue supporting their favourite traders and local businesses while works are underway along Hampshire Road – remember all the shops and restaurants will remain open for business during this time,’ Cr Papafotiou said.

The works will add:

  • bigger footpaths
  • new garden beds with trees
  • new water feature and raised grassed area
  • new street furniture
  • upgrade to traffic signals at Devonshire Road intersection
  • improved bike connections
  • two raised pedestrian crossings across Hampshire Road
  • new street lighting

Council will be working to minimise the impact of construction on trading. Access to shops, businesses and residences in this stretch of Hampshire Road will be maintained throughout construction.

From Monday 17 February, Hampshire Road between Bennett Place and Devonshire Road will be temporarily closed to vehicles during construction. Drivers are urged to seek an alternative route. Detours will be in place and the community is asked to look out for and follow the detour signs.

Once work is completed, Hampshire Road will remain open to traffic with one lane in each direction – similar to Hampshire Road south of Devonshire Road.

Work is expected to finish in late 2020.

The civic green development will be funded through Council’s 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 capital works budgets.

New upgrade works at MB Lynch Memorial Gardens on Hampshire Road will also commence shortly and are expected to finish by mid-2020. The reinvigorated design will include new pathways, shelters, seating, feature lighting, shade trees and garden beds.
