Works to update a 1960s-era bridge on Wilton Road at Awaba are set to commence in early July, improving travel times and safety.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the improvement works would increase the load capacity of the bridge, which had previously been restricted.

“This bridge was built in 1969 and is nearing the end of its useful life,” Cr Fraser explained.

“This upgrade will not only increase the load capacity of the bridge, it will make travel through Awaba safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike.”

As part of the works, the existing timber bridge will be replaced to bring the structure up to current standards.

Pedestrian and cycle access will also be incorporated into the upgrade to improve safety for those walking or riding across the bridge. Works will also be undertaken to relocate a water main and a power pole to accommodate the new bridge.

The project is jointly funded by the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Bridges program and Lake Macquarie City Council.
