Construction has started on a new pedestrian pathway which will enhance road safety and better connect Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island.
The $835,000 project is being jointly funded by Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government’s Transport and Tourism Connections Program.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said connecting the existing walkways and moving pedestrians off the road would enhance the visitor experience on Magnetic Island while improving safety for people travelling in the area.
“Magnetic Island is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful beaches and the natural environments, with locals and tourists often taking the opportunity to walk between the bays,” Cr Hill said.
“It’s important that we work on projects that improve the ability and experience of these walks.
“Currently, there are sections of the walking track between Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay where track users are required to walk on the road for a short distance. This project will resolve that issue.
“This project is more complicated than our usual pathway projects because of the location and the type of environment we are building in so there will be some temporary closures to the tracks in the area while we complete the works.
“Council has engaged a local business, CES Civil, to deliver this project, which is expected to take nine weeks to complete, weather permitting, and support up to 20 local jobs.”
Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the Transport and Tourism Connections Program was aimed at improving access to Queensland’s world class tourism destinations to enhance the visitor experience and grow the tourism industry.
“Magnetic Island is the jewel in Townsville’s tourism crown, and we want locals and tourists to be able to get around the island safely,” Mr Stewart said.
“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to partner with Townsville City Council and provide $375,000 in funding for this important project.
“This project is a win-win for the community – it will enhance the current pedestrian link while at the same time supporting jobs.”
Council will continue to keep the community up-to-date on these closures and any other potential impacts to residents and visitors to the Island.
