Sandringham residents can look forward to a new Hampton Pier thanks to the Allan Labor Government, with early works and designs now underway to replace the existing life expired structure in Melbourne’s bustling bayside.
Hampton’s existing pier will soon be removed as the first step in the project which will ensure the area is safe ahead of the busy summer season.
The project forms part of an $18 million package for critical maintenance and safety works for piers and jetties across the state, announced in the Victorian Budget 2022-23.
Hampton Pier was built in the 1880s and has been repaired over many decades and with the timber structure now at the end of its design life, it will be removed before the busy summer calendar of on-water events in the harbour begins, with contractors getting started this month.
Located in Sandringham Harbour, the popular pier has long attracted visitors for fishing, walking and boating.
Parks Victoria completed the Sandringham Local Port Area Plan in 2022, which included public consultation on ideas for the new pier. Construction will start after designs, planning and procurement are completed.
The Labor Government announced $46 million in the Victorian Budget 2023-24, so critical works can take place at other popular piers and jetties across the state including at Warneet, St Leonards, and Dromana.
