Xavier University, Baylor partner for Medical Track Program

Xavier University of Louisiana

and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston have partnered to establish an initiative that allows qualified Xavier students to participate in a collaborative Medical Track Program that facilitates assured acceptance into the School of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Xavier also has established early assurance programs with six other institutions including Tulane University, University of Rochester, St. Louis University, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Penn State. The partnership is one of four Baccalaureate/Medical Doctorate Program partnerships at Baylor.

The Xavier-Baylor partnership was established to build on the environment of inclusiveness at Baylor College of Medicine and to provide Xavier students, including traditionally underrepresented minorities, with a smooth transition from undergraduate programs to more advanced graduate programs. Three Xavier students will have the opportunity to participate in the collaborative medical track program that facilitates acceptance into the medical school.

“Our commitment at Baylor College of Medicine to diversity and inclusion creates the best environment for success across our mission areas of healthcare, research, education and community outreach. This important collaboration with Xavier University will strengthen this commitment, and I look forward to welcoming students from this new partnership into the Baylor family,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of Baylor College of Medicine. “Increasing the diversity of healthcare professionals is essential for providing the best care to patients across the country. We’re excited to partner with Xavier University to educate a diverse group of future physician leaders who will provide excellent medical care in communities across the city, state, country and world while continuing to foster an environment of inclusiveness at Baylor College of Medicine.”

Starting Nov. 1, 2020, the application will be made available on the Xavier website and applications will be due Dec. 1, 2020. Students will be required to submit standardized test scores, official college transcripts from all universities attended and letters of recommendation from a Health Professions Committee or three letters of recommendation from a premedical advisor or an academic advisor. Applicants will also be required to complete a successful interview with the Xavier/Baylor Medical Track Program committee.

“Creating new opportunities that are altogether rewarding, challenging and innovative for our students after they’ve completed undergraduate study, is one of our top priorities at Xavier. This new agreement speaks to the exceptional academic quality of our students and provides another opportunity for them to continue their studies at a premier institution,” said Dr. Anne McCall, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Xavier University of Louisiana. “We live in a world where healthcare is changing and evolving. This partnership will further equip our students with the diverse tools and training that they’ll need to foster equity in the medical field and compete on an international level.”

Accepted students will be required to maintain good academic standing at Xavier and maintain a semester and cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 (including BCPM with no grades lower than “C”) for four consecutive years. Students must also take the Medical College Admission Test no later than spring of junior year with a minimum score of 502 and no section score lower than 124. Accepted students will also be required to successfully complete the summer internship after sophomore year and receive satisfactory evaluations from the Baylor staff.
