Yarra City Council has awarded a total of $1.15 million for 123 local projects and initiatives spanning social equity, health and wellbeing, arts, sustainability, sport and much more.
Yarra’s Annual Grants program provides funding for a wide range of projects and programs being delivered by leading not-for-profit, grassroots community organisations and individuals. For every dollar spent by Council, there is $4 of benefit for the community.
Yarra Mayor Claudia Nguyen said the grants program is pivotal in supporting the many organisations and individuals who are working to strengthen the community in Yarra.
“From senior’s social events and homework clubs to multicultural pop-up markets and thought-provoking art exhibitions – this year’s Annual Grants recipients are doing incredible work for the community” Mayor Nguyen said.
“Our Annual Grants program continues to grow more and more far-reaching each year. We’re proud to announce that 24 out of 123 recipients are new grantees. I look forward to seeing all of these unique and important projects come to life next year.”
Applications are assessed against a number of criteria, including the capacity to deliver outcomes aligned with Yarra’s Council Plan and target the areas of highest need within the community. Many of Yarra’s grants support the work of local not-for-profits helping some of our most marginalised communities – whether that’s through alleviating food insecurity, providing social support for older people, supporting new migrants and much more.
This year’s successful grant recipients include:
- Flow Festival – funding for Australia’s Deaf Arts festival to deliver creative development work at Abbotsford Convent and develop a partnership with Polyglot Theatre. First-time Annual Grant recipients.
- Positive Attitude Inc – funding to coordinate social luncheons for people living with HIV and the LGBTQIA+ community. First-time Annual Grant recipients.
- Richmond Community Garden Group – funding to support education on inner-city gardening and urban food production, produce swaps, social connections and community resilience.
- Cultivating Community – funding to collaborate with North Richmond Salvation Army on a series of social gatherings for multicultural groups aged 50 and older.
Yarra’s Annual Grants are part of its broader Community Grants program that totals more than $2 million each year.
