Yarra City Council’s heritage conservation efforts have been recognised at the recent 2023 Victorian Architecture Awards.
Yarra’s appointed project architect, Conservation Studio Australia, were awarded the “Heritage Architecture Award – Conservation” for their ceiling conservation works at Fitzroy Town Hall.
The project focused on restoring 24 ceilings of varying scale and complexity at the heritage-listed landmark building. Meticulous attention was given to employing three specialised methods to stabilise and conserve these ceilings, ensuring the preservation of their original materials and construction techniques. Detailed paint sample analysis guided the restoration of the appropriate paint schemes, reviving their former splendour.
Structural remediation was also carried out on the main hall trusses, skilfully planned to prevent further roof and ceiling movement while allowing for future installation of upgraded heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
Challenges were faced in restoring the Council Chamber ceiling, severely damaged by storm events in early 2022. Approximately 50% of the original fabric was unfortunately lost due to mould. With a commitment to authenticity, the remaining decoratively-painted paper ceiling was conscientiously conserved, integrating identifiably new fabric, crafted using traditional materials and techniques.
Drainage improvements were implemented to fortify the roof against future storm-related damage. A state-of-the-art siphonic drainage system was installed to facilitate the efficient flow of water, reducing the risk of harm to the building’s integrity.
