Yipirinya School has officially returned to community-led management, ending its statutory management arrangements and opening a new chapter for one of Central Australia’s most important education providers.
A new committee bringing cultural authority, community representation and governance capability has been welcomed at a ceremony in Alice Springs, backed by a robust governance framework built over the past year.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government will continue to support the school through the transition, giving students, families and staff the certainty and security to move forward and local children a strong foundation to thrive.
Yipirinya School is returning to community-led management after delivering quality education to Aboriginal children in Alice Springs and surrounding communities for more than 45 years, combining academic learning with cultural identity, connection to Country and community wellbeing.
The school delivers the Australian Curriculum while integrating Aboriginal languages and Aboriginal knowledge systems.
The return to community-led management follows strong and sustained collaboration between the school community, the statutory manager and government agencies to restore stability and place the school on a secure, sustainable footing.
The new committee brings a balanced mix of cultural authority, community representation and governance capability, and is well equipped to lead the school into its next phase with confidence.
Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill welcomed Yipirinya School’s official transition back to community-led governance and the commencement of the new committee.
“With a robust framework and experienced committee now in place, the school enters this new chapter in a much stronger position,” Minister Cahill said.
“I thank Statutory Manager Stuart Reid, the former school committee, and government agencies for their contributions to restoring Yipirinya School to community-led management.
“This work has ensured Yipirinya School can continue delivering quality education for generations to come.”
Minister for Education and Training Jo Hersey congratulated the new Yipirinya School Committee and thanked everyone who contributed to this important transition.
“Every child, no matter where they are in the Territory, has the right to a quality education,” Minister Hersey said.
“I look forward to seeing the school continue to thrive and deliver the best possible outcomes for students, families and the wider community.”
The new Yipirinya School Committee: Beverley Angeles, Cherisse Buzzacott, Kumalie Kngwarraye, Shirleen Campbell, Kate Mar Fan, Mathew Axeton, Neil McLeod, Dominic McCormack and Jake Quinlivan.
