More than 200 students from across Shellharbour came together to explore the future of leadership, technology and innovation at the 2026 Shellharbour Youth Summit.
Held at the Shellharbour Civic Centre on Thursday 13 August, the annual Summit celebrated International Youth Day by empowering young people to think boldly about the opportunities and challenges shaping their future.

Under the theme The New Generation of Leadership: Exploring How Technology, Innovation and Leadership Can Create Opportunities for Positive Change, students participated in a day of learning, discussion and networking designed to inspire the next generation of changemakers.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the Summit highlighted the passion, creativity and leadership potential of local young people.
“The energy in the room was incredible. Our young people are curious, engaged and eager to make a positive contribution to their community and the world around them,” Mayor Homer said.
“The Summit provided valuable opportunities for students to hear from industry leaders, explore emerging technologies and gain practical insights into the skills they’ll need for the future.”
“Council is proud to support initiatives like the Youth Summit that help young people build confidence, expand their horizons and see themselves as future leaders.”

Throughout the day, students heard from leading voices in education, technology, business and sport, exploring topics including artificial intelligence, digital leadership, social media entrepreneurship and emerging career pathways.
Interactive sessions encouraged students to ask questions, share ideas and learn directly from guest speakers and community leaders, while a councillor panel provided insights into leadership and civic participation.
Since 2019, the Shellharbour Youth Summit has provided a platform for young people to connect, learn and be inspired, while strengthening youth engagement across the city.
The annual event is delivered as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting young people and creating opportunities for them to have a voice in their community.
