Nominations for Mildura Rural City Council’s 2023 Youth Awards are now open, paving the way for our community to recognise the achievements and contributions our young people make to our community.
The Awards are open to those aged between 12 and 25 who live, study or work in the Mildura Council area across three categories – Youth Worker of the Year, Community Participation Award and Endurance and Persistence.
Nominations close Friday 25 August and can be made online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/youthawards
Councillor for Community Health and Wellbeing Troy Bailey said the awards were an opportunity to highlight the positive influence of our region’s young people, which may otherwise go unnoticed.
“Each year our Youth Awards reveal incredible stories of the work being undertaken by young people in our community,” he said.
“Our 2022 Youth Award recipients displayed commitment and resilience, I expect this year to have been even more challenging for our local youth, that is why I am looking forward to seeing which nominees come forward in 2023.”
All young people nominated for an award will be recognised at a formal dinner to be held in October this year. They’ll also receive an official certificate from Council acknowledging their achievements and/or contribution to the local community.
Individual award winners will each receive a $200 voucher and a trophy.
Judging will be based on information provided in nomination forms and individual interviews based on nominees achievements over the past 12 months.
Youth Worker of the Year
This award recognises a youth worker that has demonstrated commitment to the well-being, participation and capacity-building of young people within their role. Workers include but are not limited to police, child protection, health, education, youth work and youth services, including those working with young people in the sports, recreation, and arts and culture sectors.
Examples could include acting as a role model for peers, excelling at building positive relationships with young people or making significant improvements in policy and practice to engage young people.
Community Participation Award
This award recognises young people or groups of young people who have shown leadership in their community. This includes young people or groups who provide a positive and rewarding service to other young people. The award could recognise work to promote and ensure safety of young people in the greater community or making a positive difference to the environment.
Examples could include demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of the community through volunteering their time generously, willingly and selflessly, or actively contributing towards the positive development of their community. Nominees could also have demonstrated leadership, commitment and positive role-modelling within their chosen area, whether through sports, the arts or other community-based activities.
Endurance and Persistence
This award recognises a young person who has demonstrated personal growth and endurance to overcome hardships or to achieve their goals. This may be demonstrated but is not limited to any of the following:
- Family
- Culture
- Sexual orientation
- Geographic Location
- Long term unemployment
- Health
- Disability
- Education
