Liverpool City Council is excited to announce the Zero Litter in Georges River project won the Litter Prevention/Clean Waterways category at the recent Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2023 Sustainable Cities Awards.
“This accolade recognises our commitment to safeguarding the Georges River’s health through a comprehensive catchment-wide strategy,” Mayor Ned Mannoun said.
“The project targets the reduction of litter entering the river via stormwater and it is a collaboration between local councils, including Liverpool City Council, Georges Riverkeeper, primary schools including Wattle Grove Public School, and communities.”
As part of the project, critical stormwater infrastructure has been upgraded across the catchment, Gross Pollutant Traps in the Liverpool LGA have been audited for efficiency, and a best-practice guide for the stormwater industry has been created.
“We’ve also empowered school children, such as those at Wattle Grove Public School, to champion litter prevention through education, interactive artworks, and augmented reality experiences featuring ‘Zero,’ a native long-neck turtle threatened by river pollution,” Mayor Mannoun continued.
We congratulate Maruf Hossain, Michelle Playford, Robert Werne, Joseph Gregg, Michael Caroll, Paul Hernandez, Sai Natarajan, Joel Daniels, Roshan Khadka from the Infrastructure Planning, City Presentation and City Environment teams who were responsible for managing the project here at Liverpool City Council.
