13 years of Liberal failures leave Tasmania building half the homes it needs
A damning new Housing Industry Association (HIA) report, Locked Out, confirms Tasmania’s planning system has collapsed after 13 years of Liberal Government neglect.
Tasmania completed just 2,456 new homes against its 5,022 National Housing Accord target. Delivering under half the required homes makes Tasmania the worst-performing state in Australia, locking families out and driving affordability to record lows.
Tasmania isn’t short on willing builders or buyer demand – it’s short on shovel-ready land.
The Liberal Government cannot even state how many serviced lots exist because they fail to track them. They have allowed land to stall between agencies, shifted infrastructure costs onto buyers, and delivered more than a decade of planning failure.
While Labor has listened and already committed to key HIA solutions, including a Planning Dashboard, fast-tracked Regional Land Use Strategies, Renew Tasmania to deliver strategically critical housing land, and restoring the TasWater connection fee holiday – the Liberals remain missing in action.
Minister Vincent told local councils and a parliamentary committee the Government had abandoned Development Assessment Panels, only to backflip a day later.
After 13 years, the Liberals are completely out of ideas and cannot be trusted to fix the mess they created.
