Hume City Council welcomes the Victorian Labor Party’s $15 million commitment towards a sport and arts precinct at Sunbury College.
While yesterday’s promise is a step in the right direction, Council believes more funds will be required to complete the project to adequately support students and the wider Sunbury community.
Council confirmed its in-principle willingness to partner with Sunbury College, the Sunbury Basketball Association, the Sunbury Netball Association and major political parties to further develop the proposal for the indoor sports stadium at the Council Meeting on 24 August.
Council calls upon all the major parties to match this commitment for this significant project.
Quotes attributable to Hume City Mayor, Carly Moore:
“There is a clear need for additional indoor courts in Sunbury, and Council is committed to working with key partners and major political parties to explore how this can be achieved.”
“I thank the Victorian Labor Party for this commitment and invite all major parties to support this important project. The Sunbury community deserves certainty that it will proceed regardless of the outcome of the State Election, so local families, schools and sporting clubs can have confidence that this much-needed facility will be delivered.”
“We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with our partners to develop a sustainable project that meets the needs of students, basketballers, netballers and the wider Sunbury community for decades to come.
“While Council has not committed funding to the project at this stage, any future contribution would be subject to Council’s budget process and consideration of appropriate governance, operational arrangements and community benefit.”
