2021/2022 Budget – Pools, sports facilities and playspaces to be upgraded

The City of Greater Bendigo’s proposed 2021/2022 Budget will fund upgrades to sports and recreation facilities across the municipality.

The Budget includes funding for Stage 1 of the renewed Bendigo Skate Park, which is to be relocated to Ewing Park, subject to receiving external grant funding.

Faith Leech and Brennan Park pools will undergo significant renewal works. Faith Leech and Brennan Park are amongst the City’s most popular pools, with Faith Leech supporting extended opening seasons to cater for various community uses.

Both pools are in line for minor structural and equipment improvements, as well as kiosk and change room upgrades as part of a staged improvement program.

The Kennington Pavilion upgrade at Harry Trott Oval will receive $3.2M for construction planned for 2021/2022. Design for this project is already completed and a tender for works is due to be awarded in the coming weeks. The $4M project has been jointly funded with $2M from the Victorian Government committed in 2020/2021.

The Budget also includes funding for Tom Flood sports centre for the second stage of renewing the turf in the centre of the velodrome.

Other sports and recreation upgrades to receive funding include the Heathcote Bowls Club green resurfacing, White Hills Recreation Reserve pavilion upgrade and Spring Gully soccer club sports field lighting upgrade. The Budget also includes regular programmed renewals and maintenance on sports fields, play spaces and parks.

Mayor Cr Jennifer Alden said the community placed enormous value on outdoor recreation facilities.

“One of the things people missed most during COVID-19 lockdowns was access to playspaces, pools and community sport, which shows just how important they are,” Cr Alden said

“We have always placed great importance on providing high quality sports and recreation facilities to support residents to live healthy and active lives.”
