Beams Road upgrade improves northside travel for Brisbane locals

The stage 1B upgrade has widened Beams Road to 4 lanes, separated by a median, between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road in Fitzgibbon.

More than 20,000 vehicles use Beams Road each day. The road connects Brisbane’s northern suburbs to Gympie Arterial Road and the wider road network.

The upgrade has removed a major traffic bottleneck, helping motorists make safer, more reliable journeys. Upgraded shared paths and bus stops also improve connections for people walking, cycling and catching public transport.

A new pedestrian underpass, which features a community mural, provides a safer, uninterrupted connection to the Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway.

The mural was funded by the Brisbane City Council who worked with local schools and families to help design the mural. About 70 students from nearby schools and kindergartens took part in workshops to shape artwork that celebrates the local area.

The project also delivered new creek culverts and a wildlife crossing near Cabbage Tree Creek. Landscaping and environmental improvements included planting 11,730 plants.

Construction supported 537 jobs and involved more than 141,000 hours of work.

The Australian Government contributed $50 million towards the Beams Road upgrade, which it jointly funds with Brisbane City Council through the Better Roads for Brisbane program.

Coordination with the nearby Beams Road rail overpass project is also helping improve travel reliability and connections along the broader route.
