2023-24 State Budget Community Consultation

Michael Ferguson, Treasurer

On 20 August 2022, the Community Consultation process for the 2023-24 State Budget was advertised widely and communicated to a range of stakeholders.

This process represents an important element of the State Budget development process and provides organisations with the opportunity to make suggestions for future priority setting.

To better align the process with our current Budget priorities, we have requested that submissions focus on the following areas of key importance to the Government:

  • supporting Tasmanians with the rising the cost of living;
  • improvements that could be made to existing Government services or processes,
  • including grant application and/or management; and
  • opportunities to improve services that are directed towards vulnerable people.

This year the Community Consultation process has been opened earlier, and the formal consultation timeframe extended by an additional two weeks, with submissions requested by 14 October 2022. We brought forward consultation this year so that submissions can be considered by relevant agencies earlier, when agency Budget submissions are being prepared later this year.

I note that concerns have been raised by some groups regarding meeting this year’s submission deadline.

I have previously stated that, as in previous years, the Government will still accept and consider submissions that are received after the requested date, and that Treasury will forward submissions to relevant agencies and Ministers for their consideration as part of the Budget development process.
