2024 Regional Telecommunications Review kicks off

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The Albanese Government has appointed the Hon Alannah MacTiernan – former Western Australian Minister for Regional Development, Agriculture and Food – to lead the next Regional Telecommunications Review.

Ms MacTiernan will be supported by the 2024 Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee, comprised of Ms Kristy Sparrow, the Hon Fiona Nash, Dr Jessa Rogers and Mr Ian Kelly

The Review is undertaken every three years and is an opportunity for Australians living and working in rural, regional and remote communities to share their views and experiences using telecommunications services. The Review will also work with industry to consider regulatory settings and map solutions to improve regional communications.

In undertaking its Review, the Committee will closely examine barriers that may mean people in regional, rural and remote parts of Australia do not have equitable access to telecommunications services as compared to services available within urban areas.

The Committee will also consider the unique needs of First Nations’ communities, the effectiveness of existing Government investment programs, the potential of emerging technologies, the Universal Services Obligations, and the suitability of telecommunications during emergency situations

Public consultation will commence in April this year, with the Committee’s final report due to Government by December 2024.
