Registrations are now officially open for the 2027 Great Barrier Reef Masters Games, with organisers aiming to deliver the biggest event in the Games’ history.
The 2025 Games generated an estimated $3.65 million in economic impact for the Cairns region and attracted more than 4,180 athletes, supporters and visitors.
Organisers are now setting their sights on surpassing $4 million in economic impact in 2027.
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden today launched the 2027 Games alongside Games Ambassador Mark Knowles OAM, encouraging athletes to secure their place and experience one of Australia’s premier masters sporting events.
“The Great Barrier Reef Masters Games showcase everything that sets Cairns apart; internationally recognised sporting facilities, world-class natural attractions and a vibrant dining, arts and cultural scene,” Cr Eden said.
“The competition is only part of the now. It’s what people can experience here between events that makes Cairns such a compelling host city.
“Every successful Games strengthens Cairns’ reputation as a host city. We want to be the city athletes look forward to competing in and organisers have confidence in choosing.”
More than just a sporting competition
Games Ambassador Mark Knowles OAM, one of Australia’s most decorated hockey players and an Olympic gold medallist, said the Games were about so much more than a competition.
“This event is an exciting opportunity for people to reconnect with sport, challenge themselves and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with competing alongside like-minded people,” Mr Knowles said.
“There’s always something rewarding about being part of the Games experience, whether you’re a lifelong athlete, returning to competition, or taking part in a masters event for the first time.
“Having the opportunity to compete in a destination like Cairns makes it even more special, and I’d encourage people to register early and start planning their trip.”
Since launching in 2013, the biennial Great Barrier Reef Masters Games has become one of Australia’s premier masters sporting events, attracting competitors from across Australia and overseas for five days of sport in the tropics.
Driving visitation and economic benefits
Member for Barron River Bree James said the 2027 Games would be a prime opportunity to showcase Tropical North Queensland.
“More than 15,000 visitor nights means more bookings for our hotels, more customers through the doors of our cafes and restaurants, and more money flowing into local businesses.
“These events give us an opportunity to showcase our region to thousands of visitors, and we want them to stay longer, explore further and experience everything Tropical North Queensland has to offer.
“That’s why the Crisafulli Government is backing events that bring people to our region, support local jobs and give visitors every reason to come back.”
Participants can compete across a wide range of sports while enjoying the region’s blend of reef, rainforest and tropical lifestyle experiences.
