$204 million to deliver more homes for Tasmanians this coming year alone

Guy Barnett,Minister for State Development, Construction and Housing

The 2022-23 Tasmanian Budget will deliver $204 million in capital funding towards building new homes for Tasmanians in the coming year alone, building to $538 million over the forward estimates.

Funding of $538 million, or almost 36 per cent of the Housing Package, is allocated over the 2022-23 Budget and Forward Estimates (ie the next 4 years). The balance of the funds will be allocated to the Housing Package over the remaining six years of the 10-year program.

For the Greens to reference only the additional $35 million for the new Housing Package fails to acknowledge the other $503 million that is also allocated to the Housing Package, including $204 million in 2022-23.

At $538 million over the forward estimates, this Budget allocated almost 36 per cent of our $1.5 billion package over the next 10 years.

This is all new capital funding being poured into new funding for new homes, and more accommodation for Tasmanians.

We plan to build 1,169 homes this year, meeting our target of 1,500 by June 2023 and rising to a total of 10,000 new homes by 2032 as part of our 10-year $1.5 billion housing package.

The State Budget Papers make this absolutely clear that $538 million will go towards our target of building those 10,000 new homes.

So a third of the $1.5 billion Housing Package will be provided over the next four years, along with more than 3500 homes by 2027, more than a third of our 10,000 homes.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has made access to social and affordable housing a priority and this Budget builds a strong foundation for our 10 year housing package but above all, it is ensuring more homes for Tasmanians in need.
