The Cook Labor Government is delivering one of the largest affordable and social housing projects in the Perth CBD, with work now underway on 174 new homes on Roe Street.
The 30-storey Build to Rent development is one of 21 currently under construction across Western Australia and is set to deliver 139 affordable and 35 social apartments in the heart of Perth CBD.
With the Roe Street project underway, this brings the total number of Build to Rent homes currently under construction to 1,500, with more projects expected to commence in the coming months.
The project is being delivered by the Cook Labor Government with support from the Albanese Labor Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund.
Designed by Perth-based architects MJA Studio and built by ICON Construction, the development takes inspiration from Roe Street’s Art Deco heritage and will comprise of one- and two-bedroom apartments.
Ensuring accessibility and energy efficiency, the building will be constructed to achieve a minimum Silver Livable Housing Design accessibility standard and an average 8-star NatHERS energy efficiency rating.
Sustainability features include a high-performance insulated faade, natural cross-ventilation, increased winter sun access, all-electric services and passive design measures to reduce energy use and living costs.
Located within the Perth City Link redevelopment area, the development is within walking distance of Perth Station, City West Station, Perth Busport and employment, entertainment and cultural destinations, providing easy access to public transport, jobs and services.
Perth City Link continues to evolve as a vibrant mixed-use precinct, with the Dorsett Hotel nearing completion, new student accommodation projects progressing and the ECU City Campus adding to future housing and amenity demand. The precinct is expected to deliver around 1,650 apartments once complete.
Once construction is completed in 2029, the building will be sold to a community housing provider.
This major boost to affordable, inner-city housing is part of the Cook Labor Government’s record $10.8 billion investment in housing measures since 2021.

“The Cook Labor Government has made significant investments to activate and connect our city centre, and building more homes will ensure Western Australians can make the most of it.
“The project will provide reliable, affordable rentals in walking distance to our public transport network, close to work and study opportunities and essential services.
“This is part of a strong pipeline of affordable and social homes we’re building right across our State as part of our record $4.7 billion investment in housing in our last State Budget.”

“Across WA, we are backing more than 40 Build to Rent projects, with more than 1,500 homes under construction, delivering more social and affordable housing for people on a low income and key workers.
“These large-scale construction projects will be completed in stages over the next few years and once completed will provide a significant boost to the rental housing market.”
