- Local governments to share in more than $1.1 million through the Cook Labor Government’s Riverbank program
- Protects our rivers, restores habitat, and boosts biodiversity to safeguard waterways for future generations
- Cook Labor Government delivering lasting environmental outcomes to protect and restore the Swan and Canning rivers
More than $1.1 million will be invested in local government projects helping protect and restore the Swan Canning Riverpark via the latest round of the Cook Labor Government’s Riverbank Program.
The projects will deliver practical environmental outcomes, including revegetation, weed control and foreshore erosion management, and planning and design activities that strengthen the long-term health and resilience of the Swan and Canning rivers.
The Town of East Fremantle will receive $195,515 towards replacing a river wall and associated restoration works around W. Wayman Reserve, helping safeguard riverbank ecosystems and community infrastructure.
Other significant projects include revegetation and weed control along the Canning River in the cities of Armadale and Gosnells, construction of a hybrid revetment at Coffee Point in Melville to improve shoreline resilience, and progression of the City of Nedlands’ foreshore masterplan to guide future restoration and enhancement works.
The latest commitments from the Riverbanks Program also includes $200,000 for the City of South Perth’s ongoing Coode Street Foreshore Riverbank Restoration Project, which will restore important foreshore habitat, stabilise and protect the shoreline from erosion, and improve public access and amenity for the local community.
Since 2002, the Riverbank Program has invested $32 million in more than 380 foreshore restoration projects, with matching local government contributions driving more than $60 million in works to protect and enhance the Swan and Canning rivers.
By partnering with local governments to deliver practical, on-ground restoration projects, the Cook Labor Government is protecting one of Western Australia’s most iconic natural assets while delivering on its priorities of environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and healthy waterways for future generations.
More information about the Riverbank Program is available on the DBCA website .
As stated by the Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
“The Swan and Canning rivers are among Perth’s most treasured natural assets, supporting wildlife, recreation and community connection.
“That is why we have just released our new 10-year River Protection Strategy, which is putting $7.1 million into practical projects that improve river health, restore critical habitats and strengthen the resilience of our foreshores.
“The investment in local government grants will ripple well beyond the riverbank, delivering environmental, community and recreational benefits for years to come.
“Congratulations to all successful recipients, I look forward to seeing the positive outcomes these projects will deliver.”
