Boost for healthy and affordable food across regional WA

  • Regional Western Australians will have better access to healthy, affordable food
  • More than $345,000 to strengthen local food systems across Western Australia
  • Healthway funds Edith Cowan University and WA Council of Social Service to lead the initiative
  • Continues Cook Labor Government’s investments in longer-term food security plans

The Cook Labor Government is investing $345,412 over three years to improve access to healthy, affordable food across regional Western Australia.

Supported through Healthway, Edith Cowan University (ECU) and the WA Council of Social Service (WACOSS) will lead a State-wide initiative to create healthy, environmentally sustainable food systems that ensure quality, affordable food is available and accessible for all.

It will bring together community gardens, food relief providers, growers, health services, and local organisations to create stronger local food systems and respond to the unique needs of each region.

Communities will receive practical tools, training, and support to develop partnerships and deliver meaningful outcomes.

Activities will be delivered in the Goldfields, Great Southern, Kimberley, Mid West, Peel, Pilbara, South West, and Wheatbelt regions.

This investment builds on the success of ECU’s evidence-based Food Community project, translating years of collaboration, local leadership, and community learning into lasting improvements in food security across regional WA.

Healthway is a State Government agency dedicated to health promotion and preventative health. For more information visit www.healthway.wa.gov.au .

As stated by Community Services Minister Matthew Swinbourn:

“Everyone, regardless of where they live, should have access to safe, healthy, affordable food.

“This investment will help communities turn local knowledge and ideas into action, supporting sustainable approaches that make healthy food more accessible, affordable, and available across regional WA.

“By backing local leaders and organisations, we’re helping create stronger and more resilient food networks that can support communities into the future.”
