Stronger Shared E-Bike Safety Measures: Bayside

Bayside Council has reaffirmed its commitment to pedestrian priority on footpaths and the importance of maintaining safe, unobstructed access for pedestrians, residents and businesses across Bayside.

Council is working collaboratively with shared e-bike operators and government agencies to address community concerns, following the introduction of NSW Government e-bike reforms in August 2026,

As part of these efforts, Bayside Mayor Christina Curry will meet with Lime to discuss issues raised by residents, including bike parking, obstructed access, safety concerns and responses to complaints.

The meeting will also explore opportunities to improve management of the shared e-bike service, including the expanded use of geofencing technology.

Council is committed to working with e-bike providers, Transport for NSW and relevant authorities to investigate shared e-bike geofencing trials across Bayside, subject to statutory requirements, technical feasibility and necessary approvals.

Council will also seek operational data, including information on complaints, obstruction incidents, response times, parking compliance and the effectiveness of any geofencing measures to support evaluation of future trials.

Bayside Mayor Dr Christina Curry said

“We recognise that shared e-bikes provide an important transport option for many people, but we also understand the frustration residents experience when bikes are parked inappropriately or obstruct access to homes, businesses and public facilities,” Mayor Curry said.

“Council’s priority is to ensure that footpaths remain safe and accessible for everyone. We are committed to working constructively with Transport for NSW and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions that improve rider behaviour and strengthen operator accountability.”
