Council Reviews Use Of Smart Glasses In Council Venues

Bayside Council will undertake a review of conditions of entry, customer codes of conduct, operational procedures and relevant policies across a range of Council facilities to address the use of smart glasses and other wearable recording devices.

The review will apply to the Angelo Anestis Aquatic Centre, Council-operated children’s services and early education centres, libraries, and the Arncliffe Youth Centre.

As part of the review, Council will investigate the introduction of provisions to prohibit the unauthorised use of smart glasses and other wearable recording devices within Council facilities.

Some exceptions may apply, including where the use is required for accessibility, disability support or other legitimate purposes approved by Council.

The review reflects Council’s commitment to protecting privacy, supporting child safety and ensuring Council facilities remain welcoming, inclusive and safe environments for all users.

Council will also investigate appropriate signage and community education measures to ensure residents, visitors and facility users clearly understand Council’s requirements regarding the use of smart glasses and other wearable recording devices.

Bayside Mayor Dr Christina Curry said:

“Council already regulates photography, filming and inappropriate recording activities in many of its venues,” Mayor Dr Christina Curry said.

“However, emerging wearable technologies warrant a review to ensure they are specifically addressed and that community expectations regarding privacy and safety continue to be met.”

“It is important that we continue to provide welcoming and inclusive public spaces while protecting the privacy of our residents, staff and visitors, particularly in facilities used by children and young people.”
