The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released the latest annual update for Marriages and Divorces, Australia. This release covers national and state statistics on marriages and divorces in 2025.
Here are seven interesting statistics from today’s release:
- There were 118,804 marriages in 2025 – that’s 2,040 less than last year.
- In addition, the marriage rate dropped to 5.3 in 2025, down from 5.5 in 2024. The marriage rate measures the number of marriages in the year per 1,000 people aged over 16.
- Saturday 25 October (25/10/25) was the most popular date to get married, with 2,035 marriages. That date had around 500 more marriages than the second most popular date on Saturday 22 November (22/11/25) which had 1,527 marriages.
- Around 3.9 per cent of all marriages were between partners of the same sex or including a person who was non-binary. This has stayed consistent over the last three years.
- The divorce rate rose slightly to 2.2 in 2025. However, the long-term trend is still down (in 2005, the divorce rate was 3.3). The divorce rate measures the number of divorces in the year per 1,000 people aged over 16.
- The median duration from marriage to separation is up to 9.4 years. In 2005, the median duration was 8.8 years.
- 10 November 2012 (10/11/12) is still the most popular date for marriages in the last 20 years with 3,081 marriages on that one day! Second place – 11 November 2011 (11/11/11) – only had 2,614.
