89 charged during three-day surge operation in Sydney’s south west – Operation Trident

Police have charged 89 people during a three-day surge operation across Sydney’s South West Metropolitan Region, under Operation Trident.

In October 2025, police launched Operation Trident to target a range of criminal behaviour and offenders in Sydney’s Metropolitan region.

As a part of the ongoing operation, officers attached to South West Metropolitan Region launched a three-day surge from Saturday 27 June 2026 to Monday 29 June 2026.

The high-visibility operation focused on targeting Organised Crime Networks (OCN), high-risk offenders with outstanding warrants, conducting Firearms Prohibition Order (FPO) compliance searches, and knife scanning.

More than 490 officers from multiple commands across Sydney’s three Metropolitan Regions were tasked to the operation, along with extra resources from Police Transport Command and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.

During the operation, police conducted 32 firearms and weapons compliance checks, with two premises being searched.

A number of knife scanning operations were conducted at transport hubs in Liverpool, Merrylands, Granville, Campbelltown, Macarthur and Glenfield areas, where 15 knives were seized after 394 people were scanned.

About 731 roadside breath tests, 89 roadside drug tests were also conducted across the operation.

In total, 89 people were charged with 294 offences, and136 infringement notices were issued.

Detective Superintendent Brett Van Akker from South West Metropolitan Region said the Operation Trident surge was a success.

“Operation Trident is an intelligence-based operation that allows police to proactively disrupt high-risk offenders and prevent criminal behaviour,” Detective Superintendent Van Akker said.

“The message is clear. Any forms of criminal activities will not be tolerated anywhere in NSW, including the Sydney’s metropolitan region.

“Police will continue to target anyone who threatens the safety of the members of community and will bring them before the court.”

Incidents of note include:

  • About 10.30pm on Saturday 27 June 2026, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were patrolling Waterloo Road, Greenacre, when they located a white hatchback with incorrect numberplates attached. A short time later, the vehicle came to stop on Solomon Circuit, and the driver – a 45-year-old man – was subjected to a roadside drug test, which returned with an alleged positive reading. An oral fluid sample was obtained for a secondary test, which returned with an alleged positive reading to methamphetamine. He was arrested and taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, use class A vehicle with unauthorised number plate affixed, and goods in personal custody suspected being stolen. He was granted conditional bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday 29 July 2026.

  • About 4.40pm on Sunday 28 June 2026, officers attached to Operation Trident attended a licensed premises on Woodward Crescent, Miller, where they arrested a 25-year-old man for an alleged breach of bail. During the arrest, police searched a vehicle parked in front of the premises and allegedly located a small amount of cocaine, along with a number of mobile phone devices. He was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he was charged with supply prohibited drug more than indictable and less than commercial quantity, possess prohibited drug, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and breach of bail. He was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Monday 29 June 2026.

  • About 7.40pm on Sunday 28 June 2026, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped a vehicle on Stapleton Street, Pendle Hill. Checks revealed the vehicle had incorrect numberplates attached to it. The driver – a 32-year-old man – was arrested and taken to Granville Police Station where he was charged with drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, use class A vehicle displaying misleading etc number, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Cout on Monday 29 June 2026.
