Our men and women in blue have channelled the man in the big red suit, to help deliver some Christmas cheer to sick kids across the Murray River region.
NSW Police Officers from the Murray River Police District Police – with help from Australian Defence Force personnel – have today delivered presents for children spending the holiday period as patients in Albury Base Hospital.
Local businesses and the community have donated more than 300 gifts over the past six weeks, as part of the Annual Children’s Ward Christmas Appeal.
The gifts will be handed out on Christmas Day helping to bring a smile to those children doing it tough this festive season.
Any remaining gifts will be saved and donated to children throughout the year to brighten the day of any young person undergoing health battles.
Murray River Police District, Det. Sergeant Troy Martin, said he’s been overwhelmed by the community’s support.
“It’s always heart-warming to see people rally around our most vulnerable in our community to make Christmas extra-special. It’s not only the kids who love it, but it is one of our officers’ favourite days of the year,” Sgt Martin said.
“This event is only possible thanks to the generous donations from local businesses and the community, and we thank each and everyone of them for getting behind this important cause. There’s no better feeling than seeing those big smiles on the children’s faces.”
Albury Wodonga Health Director of Midwifery & Children’s Services Julie Wright said the impact the appeal has on the children is immeasurable.
“Just to see their excitement and see them forget, albeit for a short period, the battles they are fighting to enjoy Christmas is just so incredible. It really brightens their day and helps them forget they are away from home.”
The Annual Children’s Ward Christmas Appeal has been running since 2019 and is a partnership between NSW Police, Albury Wodonga Health and the Australian Defence Force.
