Abai update: rescued koala joey doing well

Kempsey Shire Council

Abai, Kempsey’s favourite koala joey, rescued from a car accident on Crescent Head road, is thriving.

Rescued by a quick-thinking resident, Abai has been settling into home care with dedicated wildlife carers, who have been feeding her a specialised diet of Biolac200 and fresh eucalyptus leaves.

When Abai came into care, she was tiny, weighing in at just 1.4kg. Abai will need to weigh 2.5kg before being released into the Koala Hospital where she will be cared for until fully grown and can safely be released into the wild.

In great news, Abai has graduated from an indoor space into an outdoor enclosure and is weighing in at 1.86kg, a weight gain of 450g since being rescued.

Please be aware that Koala breeding season runs from August through February each year, and you’ll notice koalas are more active and may frequently cross roads or venture into our towns.

Pay extra attention to the roads, especially during dusk and dawn, when koalas are most active. Slow down and drive carefully, especially at night, to avoid any unfortunate accidents.

If you do some across a koala in need, please phone the Koala Emergency Rescue Line on 02 6584 1522.
