The ACT Greens have welcomed the announcement of $950m over five years for education infrastructure in the 2021/22 ACT Budget.
ACT Greens Education Spokesperson Johnathan Davis MLA says this funding should prioritise increased accessibility and the retention of dedicated learning environments.
“I’m delighted that the ACT Government has allocated $950m over five years to build and improve school infrastructure. What is important though is ensuring that this $950m is spent on delivering safe, accessible and appropriate learning environments,” Mr Davis said.
“As a member of the Standing Committee on Education and Community Inclusion, I’ve heard a number of instances across our community where our school buildings aren’t meeting community expectations.
“During these committee hearings, we heard from a number of disability advocates who described a range of accessibility concerns in ACT schools.
“I’ve also heard of dedicated learning environments such as libraries and art rooms being used as full-time classrooms due to schools being over their capacity.
“More money is always welcome, but this new money must be invested strategically and using the best available evidence to ensure our schools are meeting the needs of our diverse and growing community,” Mr Davis said.

- School upgrades and expansions
- Developing a P-6 school in Strathnairn
- Planning new and expanded public schools, and
- Advancing hazardous material removal from schools
- Further developing the Set Up For Success Strategy to introduce 3 year old preschool
- Working with people with disabilities to develop a plan for inclusive education.
