ACCI endorses Senator Cormann for OECD

ACCI strongly supports Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s nomination of Senator Mathias Cormann to the role of Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Senator Cormann is a notable example of Australia’s many multicultural success stories. He is a migrant with significant international experience who has operated at the highest and most complex level of Australian Government while bridging the political divide time and time again to pass important legislation in the national parliament.

An OECD-led global recovery is crucial in this ongoing pandemic. And in 50 years of Australia’s membership, the organisation has never been more critical to ensuring our own economic success and the standards of living we hope to pass on to our next generations.

This is a unique opportunity for an Australian with a proven track record in economic leadership and administration to play a leading role in the greatest global economic challenge since World War II.

As Finance Minister for more than seven years, Senator Cormann is well-equipped for the task. He has been at the heart of the Australian Government’s targeted and timely response at this challenging time, resulting in our country performing remarkably well compared to others in limiting the impact on lives and livelihoods. He has influenced Government fiscal policy, which features strong support for the private sector, the economic engine of the economy, through both the emergency response and into early stages of recovery.

As the Australian member of the influential Business at the OECD (BIAC) network, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and International Organisation of Employers (IOE), ACCI understands the importance of working with the international community to shape policies that will allow us to effectively deal with the economic fallout from the pandemic and build global recovery.

Our membership of BIAC provides us with unparalleled insights and access to the OECD and allows us to engage on behalf of Australian industry.

There has never been a better time for an Australian to step up to provide leadership and policy foresight to the world’s leading economies. We are proud to support Senator Cormann’s candidacy.
