Additional charges laid after inquiries into fraudulent rideshare driver at Wollongong, NSW

Police have laid additional charges against a man allegedly pretending to be a rideshare driver in the Wollongong area last month.

About 2.40am on Saturday 23 October 2021, it will be alleged a man approached a woman in the vicinity of a licensed premises, claiming his phone app was off-line.

It is further alleged the man has then performed an indecent act upon the female who entered the vehicle.

Following an extensive investigation, officers from Wollongong Police District stopped a Honda Accord on Robinson Street, Wollongong, about 9pm Monday 25 October 2021, and arrested a 34-year-old man.

He was charged and remains before the courts.

Following further inquiries, police laid two additional charges against the man yesterday (Thursday 4 November 2021).

The charges include; take person intend commit serious indictable offence (serious indictable offence), and sexually touch another person without consent.

The Wollongong man is next due to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 9 November 2021.
