Additional charges have been laid following ongoing protest activity which has disrupted sections of the rail network and affected commuter trains in the Hunter/Newcastle region.
About 6am yesterday (Monday 15 November 2021), a 28-year-old woman was arrested by officers attached to Newcastle City Police District, with the assistance of Police Rescue, at the rail corridor just south of Maitland Road, Sandgate.
She was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with hinder working of mining equipment and cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock.
Following inquiries, the woman was charged with further offences of do act with intent to kill or injure person on railway, cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock and endanger safety of person on railway, under Section 211 of the Crimes Act 1900.
The Victorian woman was given conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Tuesday 16 November 2021).
About 10am yesterday, a 24-year-old woman was arrested by officers attached to Newcastle City Police District, with the assistance of Police Rescue, at the rail corridor near Ayrshire Crescent, Sandgate.
She was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with hinder working of mining equipment and cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock.
Following inquiries, the woman was charged with further offences of do act with intent to kill or injure person on railway, cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock and endanger safety of person on railway, under Section 211 of the Crimes Act 1900.
The Victorian woman was given conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.
About 7.30am today, a 40-year-old man was arrested by officers attached to Newcastle City Police District at a business on Curlew Street, Kooragang Island.
The Newcastle man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and is expected to be charged later today.
Police formed Strike Force Tuohy as they continue proactive operations to actively prevent and disrupt illegal protests in the Hunter/Newcastle region.
Since Friday 5 November 2021, officers have arrested 18 people – including nine men and nine women – who are all members of same group.
Officers from Strike Force Tuohy, with the assistance of Police Rescue, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Public Order and Riot Squad, PolAir and intelligence resources, stand ready to target anyone engaging in this dangerous and criminal behaviour, and will not hesitate to take the appropriate action.
