Additional Charges Laid Over Monterey Fatal Crash

The alleged driver of a second car has been charged with two counts of manslaughter over a crash in Sydney’s south last year, in which two young brothers died.

It was about 10pm on Friday 25 August 2023, that emergency services were called to The Grand Parade, Monterey, after a Subaru WRX left the road and hit a tree.

Two boys – aged nine and 10 – died shortly after being taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital, while a nine-year-old girl and the alleged driver, a 33-year-old man, escaped with relatively minor injuries.

Inquiries were taken over by specialist officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU), who charged the driver of the Subaru with two counts of aggravated dangerous driving causing death, and one count of cause bodily harm by misconduct. He remains in custody before his next appearance in Downing Centre Local Court on 2 May 2024.

Police have alleged in court the Subaru and an Audi A4 sedan were street-racing immediately before the crash.

The driver of the Audi, a 25-year-old man from Roselands, was charged last September 2023 with two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, organise, promote etc race between vehicles, and two counts of fail to stop and render assistance after impact causing death.

Following further inquiries, that driver was today (Thursday 14 March 2024), charged with two counts of manslaughter. He will next appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 2 May 2024.

A 24-year-old woman, alleged to be the passenger of the Audi at the time, remains on conditional bail charged with conceal serious indictable offence. She is next due in court on 11 April 2024.
