Additional parking added in Nicholson Street – East Gippsland

In response to feedback from local traders, East Gippsland Shire Council has committed to adding nine new parking spaces as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the Nicholson Street Mall precinct in Bairnsdale.

Mayor Cr Tom Crook said Council understood the importance of providing convenient access to businesses, shops and services in the area.

“Reinstating parking spaces will make it easier for residents and visitors to support our local economy, fostering improved shopping and dining experiences,” Cr Crook said.

The decision to add parking spaces follows initial pedestrian-friendly initiatives in 2017 aimed at enhancing safety and walkability stemming from the ‘Re-imagining Bairnsdale’ urban development plan. While prioritising pedestrian access, residents and businesses have highlighted a preference for additional parking.

The project, set to begin after Easter, will take approximately six weeks to complete, with minimal disruptions for local businesses and visitors. The contract for this work was awarded to local company Cranes Asphalting and Bitumen Sealing.

Nine additional parking spaces will be provided, addressing concerns raised by local traders regarding the reduction of parking spaces within the Nicholson Street Mall precinct after redevelopment works.

Regular updates will be provided to local traders and the community through Council’s YourSay East Gippsland website. Council assures shop owners will be informed of the construction program before commencing works and will receive ongoing communication throughout the project’s delivery.

This project is fully funded by Council.
