AEU welcomes SA Labor public school funding promise

Students will be the biggest winners from a South Australian Labor commitment to renegotiate the funding deal for the State’s public schools, according to the Australian Education Union.

AEU South Australian Branch President, Lara Golding said the SA Labor commitment would mean more teachers in classrooms and smaller class sizes.

“South Australian students will be the biggest winner from this commitment.

“Restoring public school funding to 100 per cent of the Schooling Resource Standard will mean public school students get greater individual attention and more support to achieve to their full potential.

“It will also mean more support for students with additional needs, which is absolutely critical,” Ms Golding said.

AEU Federal President Correna Haythorpe said the commitment from the SA Labor Opposition had national significance.

“Currently, the structure of the funding deals between the states and the Commonwealth bakes in a deep funding inequity for public school students.

“SA Labor’s commitment to renegotiate the funding deal is a call out to all political parties at both the state and federal level on the importance of bringing public school funding to a minimum of 100 per cent of the SRS.

“With a state election and a federal election just around the corner, we now need to see detailed commitments to ensure public school students have proper and fair school funding from the State and Federal Coalition as well as the Federal Labor Party,” Ms Haythorpe said.
