A Freedom of Entry march will take place on the Cairns Esplanade on Saturday 1 August, with the 104 Squadron Air Force Cadets exercising their traditional right to march through the city. The march is a military honour for the squadron in recognition of the strong bond between the community and the unit.
The event is part of the Squadron’s 75th anniversary celebrations, which coincide with Cairns’ 150 year celebrations. It is a sign of respect that dates back to the Middle Ages when cities were protected by walls and outside armed forces were rarely granted access.
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said she had felt privileged and honoured to be involved in the historic event.
“A Freedom of Entry march represents the highest civic honour that a local government can bestow on a military unit,” Cr Eden said.
“It is a symbolic honour that reminds us the strongest communities are built on individual trust and respect.”
“It recognises not only the service to our Air Force Cadets, but also the enduring connection between the people of Cairns and those who choose to serve while celebrating two significant milestones in our city’s history.”
Commanding Officer of 104 (City of Cairns) Squadron AAFC, Ed Hayton, said the anniversary celebration had been an opportunity to honour its long-standing connection to the Cairns community.
“We will celebrate the 75th Anniversary for a special branch of the services that of, 104 (City of Cairns) Squadron, Australian Air Force Cadets,” Mr Hayton said.
“In harmony with Cairns City’s 150th, our Squadron today exercises its right, title, privilege, honour and distinction of again marching through the streets of the City once more as part of it’s 75th celebration, with its pomp and ceremony.”
“Today the Unit is accompanied by the Navy Band, with a small contingent of ex-members falling in behind.”
The 104 (City of Cairns) Squadron will march along the Esplanade, starting at 8am from Fogarty Park, with swords drawn, drums beating, banners flying, and the Royal Australian Navy band playing.
Additionally, a C-130J Hercules transport aircraft will conduct a flypast at approximately 8.10am, providing a spectacular highlight during the parade proceedings.
The Squadron will be challenged by a representative of the Queensland Police Service before continuing the march and performing an eyes right salute to Cairns Mayor Amy Eden at the Cairns Cenotaph.
The march will end at Crystalbrook Riley (corner of Esplanade and Minnie St) at approximately 8.30am.
The Freedom of Entry event is part of host of Australian Defence Force activities taking place in Cairns during that week. Which includes:
- Ceremonial sunset parade at Cairns Cenotaph on Thursday 30 July
- The ADM Queensland Defence Summit on Thursday 30 July
- The HMAS Cairns Open Day on Saturday 1 August
- The AAFC at the Cairns Airport Careers Day on Sunday 2 August.
Rolling road closures will be in place along the Cairns Esplanade during the parade. Minor traffic delays may be experienced.
