Allens advises on Hazelwood Battery

Allens has advised ENGIE and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) on the procurement of Australia’s largest privately-funded and owned utility scale battery.

The battery will be built, operated and maintained for 20 years by global market leader in energy storage products and services, Fluence. It will provide 150MW/150MWh of flexible energy and has the capacity to store the equivalent of an hour of energy generation from rooftop systems of 30,000 homes.

Co-lead Partner Kate Axup said, ‘We’re proud to have assisted ENGIE and GIG with this first-to-market project which changes the face of the battery market in Australia. This project demonstrates that battery storage can and will play a key role in accelerating Australia’s transition toward renewable and sustainable energy systems.’

Co-lead Partner David Donnelly agreed, noting, ‘A number of thematics support energy storage, particularly when co-located with other sustainable energy assets. ENGIE and GIG have demonstrated strong market leadership in transitioning the decommissioned Hazelwood Power Station into a long term sustainable energy asset.’
