Rocket Engine Donated by Australian Drag Racing Legend to Assist Lloyds Auctions Bushfire Relief Charity Auction

A MegaBoom 300,000 Horsepower rocket motor that once had a man strapped to it, and launched to 46 g-force, has been donated to assist with aiding the bushfire relief auction which has blasted off in the last 24 hours.

The US Aerodyne MegaBoom Rocket engine was an exciting part of the China Lake human g-force tests undergone back in the 1960’s and has been generously donated by Rosco McGlashan an Australian drag racing record-holder to be featured in Lloyds Auctions Bushfire Relief Charity Auction.

This iconic engine is well known in the United States, as Col John Stapp rode the rocket sled back in the 60’s to test space structures, subjecting his body to unbelievable forces, exceeding 46 g-force in this MegaBoom.

Mr Stapp’s efforts in the MegaBoom led him to be known as the ‘fastest man on earth’, going on to assist in improving the safety on forms of travelling modes such as planes and cars, providing a further understanding on the human tolerance to g-forces, until he passed away in 1999 at the age of 89.

Chief Operations Officer, Mr Lee Hames, has stated how unique this item is, and is certainly one they haven’t seen come through auction before.

“What an incredibly exciting and unique item we have up for auction, with such an important rich history that everyone can relate to,” said Mr. Hames.

“It’s incredible to think someone put their body on the line for this testing and the change that has made in our technology for cars and planes,” he continued.

“We have never had something quite like this MegaBoom come through our auctions, so we are very excited to see how much money this iconic rocket can raise.”

All proceeds raised for this rocket motor will be donated to the Australian Red Cross.

“We have over 100 lots online at present, this incredible MegaBoom being one of them, with 100% of proceeds going towards nominated charities and fire-fighters,” Lee said.

“There are zero fees and costs involved, so we highly encourage those who are able, to jump on and have a bid to support our fellow Australians affected in this terrible crisis.”

The auctions to come over the next few weeks will feature a wide range of items including sporting and motoring memorabilia, pink and yellow diamonds, artworks from famous artists, experiences and services.
