Animal cruelty charge laid after kitten found dead with serious head injuries in Sydney CBD

A man will face court today charged following an investigation into an alleged act of cruelty towards a kitten in Sydney’s CBD.

About 6pm yesterday (Monday 13 April 2020), officers from Sydney City Police Area Command were called to the basement of an apartment building in Pitt Street, Sydney, after a kitten, wrapped in plastic, was found dead in a backpack.

Officers commenced an investigation and notified the RSPCA, before conveying the kitten’s body to a nearby veterinarian.

Following extensive inquiries, two 19-year-old men were arrested at a unit on Pitt Street, and taken to Day Street Police Station.

During a search of the unit, police located and seized a bloodied bathrobe to undergo forensic examination.

One of the men was charged with commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal.

Police will allege in court that the ginger kitten suffered serious head and mouth injuries inside the unit before the 19-year-old man put the male cat on his balcony and closed the door to not hear him crying.

He was refused bail to appear before Central Local Court today (Tuesday 14 April 2020).

The second man was released, pending further inquiries.
