ANSTO strengthened its longstanding partnership with Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) through a recent visit to Jakarta and Serpong aimed at expanding collaboration in nuclear science, technology and research infrastructure.
The visit provided an opportunity to reaffirm the strong science and technology relationship between Australia and Indonesia and to discuss opportunities to deepen collaboration in areas of shared interest across agriculture, environment, health, industry, and cultural heritage.
ANSTO’s Dr Andrew Peele, Group Executive Nuclear Science and Technology, said scientific research partnerships play a vital role in addressing complex social challenges.
“Collaboration enables organisations to combine expertise, share access to unique research infrastructure and tackle challenges that are difficult to address alone. Strong partnerships between institutions such as ANSTO and BRIN help maximise the impact of our research and create benefits that extend well beyond our respective organisations.”
During discussions, both organisations explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation across a range of areas, including through research infrastructure access and food security research.
A highlight of the visit was a tour of BRIN’s nuclear research facilities at the G.A. Siwabessy Multipurpose Reactor in Serpong, one of the region’s most important nuclear research centres.
BRIN researchers and facility managers provided an overview of the reactor’s role in supporting research, industry and nuclear applications across Indonesia, including neutron scattering capabilities.
Discussions highlighted opportunities for scientific exchange, collaborative research projects and greater engagement between Indonesian researchers that utilise large-scale scientific infrastructure.
The visit reinforced the shared commitment of ANSTO and BRIN to advancing the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology for the benefit of society. As both organisations look to the future, there is strong potential to expand practical collaboration in research, innovation and capability building, delivering outcomes that support health, industry, environmental sustainability and economic development.
Through partnerships such as this, ANSTO continues to contribute to Australia’s international science diplomacy and strengthening relationships with key regional partners and fostering excellence in nuclear science and technology.
