7 April 2022, London- Today A.P. Moller- Maersk joins SteelZero and commits to using 100% net zero steel by 2050, with an interim target of using 50% responsibly produced steel by 2030.
This marks a pivotal moment in the global transition towards a decarbonised steel industry. Its voice, alongside eighteen other forwarding looking businesses, will enhance the demand signal for net zero steel.
A.P. Moller – Maersk is an integrated container logistics company working to connect and simplify its customers’ supply chains. As the global leader in shipping services, the company operates in 130 countries and employs approximately 95,000 people.
Steel is an integral part of Maersk’s value chain. From ships and containers to terminals and warehouses, steel is a key component of many of Maersk’s assets.
Earlier this year Maersk brought forward its net zero target by ten years, from 2050 to 2040. Addressing the carbon emissions associated with the steel that it uses is therefore a key part of its decarbonisation efforts.
We need this level of action now to drive change at the pace and scale required to fully decarbonise the steel industry. This is critical if we’re to be within a fighting chance of limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5C.
